Replacing a Heat Pump Is a Chance to Fix What the Last One Got Wrong
Most heat pumps in Napa get replaced somewhere between year twelve and year eighteen. By then the question is rarely just which model to buy. It is whether the system that is coming out was ever right for the house in the first place.
We see the same pattern often enough to expect it. A system was replaced years ago by matching whatever was already there, the ductwork was never looked at, and the homeowner has spent a decade with one room that never gets comfortable and a system that runs longer than it should.
A replacement is the one moment when all of that is on the table. We measure the house, look at the ducts and the electrical panel, and tell you what the load actually is before we quote anything. Repair It or Replace It? Honest Advice Before You Spend
Not every failing heat pump needs replacing. A capacitor, a contactor, a failed defrost board. Those are repairs, and we will tell you so even though the replacement is the bigger job for us.
The calculation changes when the compressor fails, when the system uses R-22, or when a refrigerant leak is in the coil rather than at a fitting. At that point you are putting a significant repair into equipment that is already past the middle of its life, and the money is usually better spent on the replacement.
Age alone is not the trigger. We have seen sixteen-year-old systems worth keeping and nine-year-old systems that were never installed correctly and never will run well. What matters is what failed, what it costs to fix, how the rest of the system tests, and how many seasons you would realistically get out of the repair.
We will give you both numbers and let you decide. If repair is the better value this year, we will say that.

How long does a heat pump last in Napa?
Twelve to eighteen years is typical here. Our mild climate is easier on equipment than most of the country, so a well-installed and maintained system often reaches the top of that range. Systems that were oversized or fighting restricted ductwork tend to fail earlier.
