Most HVAC failures announce themselves weeks before the system actually quits. Here are the seven signs we see most across Napa County, and what each one usually means.
1. The house won’t hold the temperature you set
If the thermostat says 72 and the house says otherwise, something between the equipment and the rooms is losing the argument. Could be a low refrigerant charge, a struggling blower, or ductwork leaking your comfort into the attic. It rarely fixes itself.
2. Short-cycling
A system that starts, runs a few minutes, and stops, over and over, is wearing itself out and running up your bill at the same time. The causes range from a clogged filter to an oversized unit to a failing sensor. Worth a professional look, and soon, because short-cycling shortens equipment life.
3. Warm air when you asked for cold, or the reverse
Air is moving but it’s the wrong temperature. That’s a classic sign of a refrigerant issue, a failed compressor or capacitor, or on the heating side an ignition or heat-exchanger problem. The heating version can be a safety issue, so don’t wait on it.
4. Ice on the lines or the coil
Ice on an air conditioner seems almost logical, it’s cold after all. It isn’t. A frozen system is being starved of airflow or charge, and running it frozen risks the compressor, which is the most expensive part in the machine. Shut it off and call.
5. Water where it shouldn’t be
A puddle by the furnace or a stain on the ceiling below the attic unit usually means a blocked condensate drain or a cracked pan. The fix is often simple. The drywall repair after you ignore it is not.
6. New noises or smells
Bangs, screeches, whistles, a burning or musty smell. Equipment tends to talk before it fails. Screeching often means a motor bearing. A burning smell means shut it down and call. Musty usually means moisture somewhere it shouldn’t be.
7. Bills creeping up with no change in habits
A system working harder to do the same job shows up on your PG&E bill before it shows up as a breakdown. And if your usage looks normal but the bill doesn’t, the system is trying to tell you something.
